Why Treats Trigger Sensitive Stomachs
Most commercial treats are loaded with ingredients that sensitive dogs struggle to process: artificial preservatives, grain fillers, multiple protein sources, and flavor enhancers. Any one of these can trigger a reaction. The more ingredients, the harder it is to identify the culprit.
Single-Ingredient Is the Starting Point
For dogs with sensitive stomachs, single-ingredient treats are the safest starting point. One protein, nothing added. If your dog reacts, you know exactly what caused it. If they don't, you've found a safe treat.
Beef vs. Lamb: Which Is Better?
Beef is the most common protein in dog treats — and also the most common allergen. If your dog has a known or suspected beef sensitivity, lamb is an excellent alternative. Air-Dried vs. Baked
Air-dried and slow-dehydrated treats are gentler on sensitive stomachs than baked or extruded treats. The lower processing temperature preserves the natural protein structure and digestive enzymes, making them easier to break down.
Introduce New Treats Slowly
Even the cleanest treat can cause a reaction if introduced too quickly. Start with a small piece — a quarter of a chew — and wait 24 hours before giving more. If your dog tolerates it well, gradually increase to a full serving over a week.
